Cribbing
Cribbing is a bad habit that some horses develop because of boredom. It is where a horse grabs a projecting object (like the top of a door, manger, fence, etc.) with it's incisor teeth, arches its Neck and gulps air. Besides causing damage to facilities and wearing down the teeth, the horse may be prone to colic and loss of condition. Cribbing can be contagious and should be stopped as soon as possible. To stop a horse from cribbing, a cribbing strap may be placed on the horse. The strp goes around the neck just behind the jowl and Poll. This strip tightens when the horse tries to crib and makes the cribbing action uncomfortable.

Smeaking a commercial anti-cribbing mixture on possible cribbing spots may also help. These mixtures are flavored with something undesireable to horses. Some home remedies that some people use include; Vasaline mized with hot-peppers and cayenne pepper or Tobasco sauce and diluted molasses.

Weaving
Weaving is another serious vice which is extremely hard to cure. This condition is when a horse swings its head from side to side. The horse will lose condition rapidly and may cause Knee and Chest problems. Weaving can be contagious so be sure to isolate any horse that weaves.

Boredom in a box stall seems to be the major cause of weaving. Give the horse lots of exercise and pasture time. When in a box stall witha half-door, don't allow the horse to place its head over the door (placing a screen in the doorway so the horse can still look out). Suspend blocks of wood or tires from the ceiling so the horse will knock into them as it weaves. Painting wide (2-3 inches) alternating black and white vertical stripes on the Wall pacing the horse's usual weaving position may make the horse dizzy when it weaves and cause it to stop.
